From
the heart-wrenching terror of September 11th, clouded behind the smoke still
smoldering from the ashes of ground zero, our government produced legislation
known as the Patriot Act. Promises and double talk poured from the
administration in the push to pass these regulations under the guise of
national security. We could win the war on terror, they argued, if only we
passed a bill that gave the government the authority it supposedly needed to do
so. Critics of the bill were concerned that the Patriot Act could be used
against American citizens, but they were quickly and methodically silenced.
Unfortunately, while the nation still grieved from the deadliest attack on
American soil since Pearl Harbor, the bill passed with only one dissenting vote in our senate. Regrettably, Americans forgot the words of one of our nation's
founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, who noted: "Those who would give up
essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither
liberty nor safety".
These
words still ring true today. Our government is encroaching on the rights of
citizens everywhere and the Patriot Act is being used at home in
many instances where the threat of terror is not an issue. The federal
government has distributed definitions of terrorism and terrorists to its law
enforcement agencies that include things the original bill was never intended to combat. This
allows federal agencies to potentially label anyone a terrorist in order to
circumvent their constitutional rights and freedoms. Department of Homeland
Security resorted to such unprecedented measure in an attempt to silence the
voice of freedom, from free speech to liberty of movement.
CCCP
is a not-for-profit organization of concerned citizens who come from all walks of
life. CCCP is dedicated to being a voice for all, to combat corrupt and
criminal elements that are covertly attempting to chip away at our
constitutional rights and freedoms. The Patriot Act, which is heralded as being
the safeguard to preserve our security, in reality is a step back in time and
is being used to neutralize civil liberties and freedoms drafted by the
forefathers of this great nation.
The
United States is in a constitutional crisis as CCCP investigates series of
events involving relentless pursuit of a whistleblower by the federal
government. In the Julia Davis case, rogue elements within the ranks of the
Department of Homeland Security misused the Patriot Act and precious government
resources in an unprecedented pursuit of a former DHS officer who was declared
a "Domestic Terrorist", subjected to warrantless surveillance,
warrantless searches, warrantless seizures, two malicious prosecutions and
false imprisonment for allegations that could not be substantiated.
Such
misuse of a legal system to punish whistleblowers and to discourage a critical
view of a government agency is a dangerous concept.
History
is not without examples of the relentless prosecution of those who dare to
think differently, and a history has a way of repeating itself. It therefore
takes no stretch of the imagination to picture law enforcement officers
arresting those accused of believing, writing or speaking that which does not
suit the government, accompanied by a thorough ransacking of their homes as an
incident to the arrest in an effort to uncover anything remotely incriminating.
In a landmark ruling, Judge Learned Hand said, 'If the prosecution of crime is
to be conducted with so little regard for that protection which centuries of
English law have given to the individual, we are indeed at the dawn of a new
era; and much that we have deemed vital to our liberties, is a delusion".
CCCP
brings the story of Julia Davis to the public to expose unlawful and
unconstitutional actions perpetrated against American citizens by the very
agency created to protect them. CCCP is taking action to initiate a formal
Congressional inquiry into these egregious violations by the Department of
Homeland Security.
The
Citizens Committee for Constitutional Protection is dedicated to safeguarding
the rights of dedicated federal officers committed to duty and honor, while
upholding a higher standard of conduct and ethics for the Department of
Homeland Security as America's frontline defense.
